BPD Officer Receives Congressional Badge Of Bravery

Indiana's two U.S. senators presented a Bloomington Police Officer with the Congressional Badge of Bravery today.

Bloomington Police Chief Mike Diekhoff nominated Officer William Abram for his response to an off-campus sexual assault callinvolving IU students back in 2014.

Senators Dan Coats and Joe Donnelly presented Abram with the medal.

Abram thanked his department and everyone involved that night, including his family.

"It's never a fun phone call to make and my wife was three centimeters dilated when I got to call her and tell her and said I'm going to be a little late," Abram says.

Mayor John Hamilton says Abram is the first Bloomington Police officer to receive the Congressional Badge of Bravery.

"Also it's very impressive the way his professional training stopped him from overreacting, getting to safety, making sure he was in control of the situation, and ultimately apprehending the suspects, which he just performed in an outstanding way in the face of grave danger," Hamilton says.

Diekhoff says he believes Abram saved the women's lives because of his calm response.
