Howard County Deputy Carl Koontz will be laid to rest in a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. today.
The funeral will be held at Northwestern High School in Kokomo, where Koontz worked as a resource officer. The public is invited to attend.
A procession from the funeral to Albright Cemetery will begin at approximately 2:30 p.m. Police are encouraging the public to stand along the procession route to honor Deputy Koontz. Police say it is customary to stand, remove your hat and cover your heart with your right hand as the procession passes.
A public visitation took place Monday afternoon at Northwestern High School.
Koontz, age 27, was shot and killed last week attempting to serve a warrant at a mobile home park in Russiaville. Sheriff Steve Rogers says its the first time in 46 years an officer was killed in Howard County on the job.
Sgt. Jordan Buckley, age 35, was also shot. He was hospitalized but later released. He credits Koontz with saving his life.
