Indiana House Republicans are proposing a bill that would grant excelling students nearly a full-ride to state colleges and universities, if they agree to teach for five years after graduation.
House Speaker Brian Bosma said his caucus will propose enough money to finance 200 scholarships and that he's working with education leaders on the proposal.
"Ball State in particular is extremely enthused about this," Bosma said. "I had a meeting with their president about this and other matters and he's extremely enthused and believes it will be a great recruiting tool to get some of our best- our top students into teaching."
Students in the top 20-percent of their high school class would get $30,000 for college. Data released in early 2015 showed a drop in the number of new teachers licenses awarded by the state.
