So called "Little Free Libraries" are gaining international popularity and are now on their way to Monroe County.
With coordination from the Monroe County Public Library, 16 neighborhood associations will maintain mailbox-sized libraries by this summer with books donated by neighborhood residents.
It's up to the neighborhood to decide the check-out process, but for the most part, residents will just need to take a book, read and return it–all for free.
Duke Energy is largely funding the project, although Lowe's is also donating materials and labor and each library will be constructed by R. Martin Woodworks.
Library officials say they want to encourage residents to share book collections and get to know their neighbors. Neighborhood associations are responsible for painting, decorating and of course, providing and maintaining the books.
