MCCSC Moves Up Last Day Of School To May 26

The last day of school for Monroe County Community Schools students has been moved up by two days to May 26.

The original last day was scheduled to be May 21, but since the start of school was pushed back by one week, MCCSC moved the end date to May 28.

At Tuesday night’s school board meeting, MCCSC Superintendent Judith DeMuth said the district will be using two of its “waiver days” that the Indiana State Department of Education granted to the district in January to now make the official last school day Wednesday, May 26.

“It’s a balance between community needs and teacher needs and student needs. We’re just thankful that we do have those couple days that we’ll be able to coordinate the closing of school in a manner that hopefully is more relaxed for our teaching staff.”

The flexibility waivers were first introduced during the state’s 2020 legislative session before the pandemic hit. They allow schools to bypass certain state requirements if they can prove it will benefit students.

Indiana law requires schools to provide 180 instructional days per school year.

Because of the waiver, MCCSC can report instructional minutes instead of instructional days. According to the district’s waiver request, MCCSC provides 4,500 and 9,900 additional minutes of instruction at elementary and secondary levels, respectively.
