Nashville Council Member Proposes Eliminating Single Districts

Nashville Town Hall will be shut down through Memorial Day.
Nashville Town Hall will be shut down through Memorial Day.

A Nashville Town Council member is proposing the town eliminate districts and have all five members on council elected at large.

Council members Nancy Crocker, Alisha Gredy and Jane Gore represent districts 1, 2 and 3, respectively.  Dave Rudd and Anna Hofstetter are at-large members.

Crocker’s proposal would make all five seats elected at large. She says the proposal would save city workers time and money.

“They spend time on creating the maps that the districts are in and putting them on the website, they get phone calls all the time, especially during voting season because people don't understand that even though they live in District 1, they still can vote for the person in District 2. It's a little confusing as far as that,” said Crocker.

Crocker estimates the town could save around $10,000 it would have to pay for redistricting, which is mandated following the census. It could also encourage more people to run for town council.

“If somebody supports me and what I'm trying to do, as far as the council, and they live three houses down, they're not going to run against me,” she said.

Crocker is asking residents to give feedback about the proposal before the next town council meeting June 17.

If passed, the measure would take effect immediately.
