A severe thunderstorm and flash flood drenched parts of Bloomington and Indiana University late Friday, damaging property and causing power outages.

Indiana University sent an alert to students and staff urging them to seek higher ground or move to a higher level in buildings affected by flooding.

"Use caution and do not drive or walk through high water. Seek higher ground or move to a higher level in your building if it is affected by flooding. Remain calm," the message said.

The message directed readers to AM 1610 or emergency.iu.edu for up-to-date information.

Photos and videos uploaded to social media showed parts of Kirkwood Avenue under several feet of water as people sheltered inside bars.

The Bloomington Fire Department reported several water rescues late Friday, and later urged drivers to stay away from flooded areas.

Duke Energy reported that thousands of homes in Bloomington were without power. It estimated most of the outages would last until 5 a.m. Saturday.
