Like many other locations near downtown Bloomington, Indiana University is working today to recover from the heavy rain that flooded areas near campus Friday night.
IU spokesperson Chuck Carney said the campus saw damage such as debris blown into pathways, felled trees, and water leaking into some buildings.
“Two days out we’re still trying to get things dried out, get things straightened up. But overall, mostly minor damage.”

Carney said more damage was seen in low lying areas such as Dunn Meadow and Indiana Avenue than most areas of campus.
Carney added flooding of the magnitude seen Friday is relatively rare for IU and will overwhelm its drainage systems. Three IU Bloomington faculty who study climate did an analysis of the storm Friday. It says a storm of this magnitude is expected around every 30 years.
IU sent an email to students and staff just before midnight warning of flash floods nearby and advising not to walk or drive through high water.
