A woman who was struck by a car and injured last summer shortly after a downtown Bloomington protest is suing the alleged driver.

According to the complaint filed in the Monroe Circuit Court in May, Chastity Mottinger is seeking damages for physical and emotional injuries.

The complaint requests a judgement against Christi Bennett, the alleged driver, who also faces multiple felony charges over the incident. It seeks damages for past and future medical expenses, lost wages, lost time and other special expenses as well as court costs.

In July, Bloomington Police arrested Bennett in Scottsburg. She was charged with criminal recklessness and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in injury.

At the time, police said the incident began when a car stopped in front of a scooter in the road. A passenger got out and threw the scooter to the side, and a 29-year-old woman "approached the vehicle and stood in front of it with her hands on the hood of the car. The vehicle then began to accelerate, causing the woman to go up onto the hood of the car."

The police said that the 29-year-old suffered a laceration to her head and was reported to have lost consciousness before being hospitalized.

The incident occurred shortly after a rally against racism at the Monroe Co. Courthouse.

Demonstrators were showing solidarity with a Black man after he reported being attacked by a group of White people the previous weekend near Lake Monroe.
