Monroe County Council President Eric Spoonmore announced this month he doesn’t plan on seeking reelection next year.
Spoonmore has served on the council since 2015, and said he wants to spend more time with his family.
“I wanted to make an early announcement on this once I had really committed to not running," he said. "So that would provide plenty of time for any interested candidates, so that they could learn about the role, really do their research on it, and assemble their campaigns.”
He said it’s important to have turnover in elected positions and adds that anyone running should enjoy working with a budget.
Spoonmore said the council will tackle some big issues before his time is up, including how to spend $27 million dollars in federal funding from the American Rescue Plan Act.
"You talk about transformative resources, this is a huge and exciting opportunity for Monroe County to do things that will have a really lasting, positive impact on our residents.”
Spoonmore said raising the minimum pay threshold for county employees to over $14 per hour and investments in public safety are some of the accomplishments he is most proud of during his time on the council.
