A garbage truck became stuck underneath the railroad bridge over North Adams Street just south of 10 th Street Tuesday.
The road had to be closed while tow trucks removed the vehicle from underneath the overpass.
“Those low railroad bridges have been hit by tall vehicles countless times over the years,” Bloomington Police Captain Ryan Pedigo said in a statement. “We always notify Indiana Railroad, as the rail and the overpass belong to them, so they can send a representative to inspect the bridge to ensure that the integrity of the structure has not been compromised.”

When the Indiana Rail Road Company is contacted because a bridge has sustained possible damage, operation of the bridge is suspended until it has been inspected.

Indiana Rail Road Company CEO Peter Mills has said incidents such as this are more frequent in Bloomington, because it has more railroad bridges going over roadways than other smaller towns where the railroad operates.
