Body Of Plainfield Man Recovered From Lake Monroe Wednesday Night

The Monroe County Dive Team recovered the body of Plainfield man, Ambachew Nigatu, from Lake Monroe Wednesday night. 

A DNR statement said he was swimming with his family at the Fairfax State Recreation Area beach when he went missing. His family checked the area, and called 911 at 5:40 p.m. The Indiana DNR, Monroe County Sherriff’s Department, and IU Hospital Bloomington EMS responded and conducted a search.

The dive team found him unresponsive at 6:50 p.m. in 6 feet of water. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Indiana Conservation Officer’s investigation is ongoing, and a final autopsy report is pending with Monroe County Coroner, Joani Stalcup.

In a statement Stalcup said while a final report is not ready, “preliminary results are cause of death consistent with drowning, manner - accident.”

Stalcup added toxicology results are pending as well.
