IU Bloomington Campus Vaccination Rate 'Approaching' 90 Percent

IU will begin the fall semester in less than two weeks and university officials report about 90 percent of all students and staff at the Bloomington campus are fully vaccinated.

The university's head of COVID-19 response Kirk White said that number drops slightly across the rest of IU's regional campuses, which have a vaccination rate around 85 percent.

"That is a great place to be and that is why we are convinced that we have a good chance of getting us back to normal," said White.

White said "normal" means fully vaccinated individuals will not be subject to weekly COVID-19 mitigation testing or be required to wear masks outside. Face coverings are still permitted inside buildings to align with Monroe County's renewed mask mandate.

People approved for a vaccine exemption for either medical or religious reasons are required to wear masks at all times on campus and get tested frequently for the virus.

County health administrator Penny Caudill said adding IU's figures will significantly raise local vaccination data but will not be counted separately from the rest of the county.

"When IU reports those numbers they are faculty, students and staff who live here and are part of our community," said Caudill.

The university’s vaccine mandate was challenged in court by a group of eight students who claimed IU did not have the authority to require them to undergo a medical procedure.

U.S. Supreme Court Justice and native Hoosier Amy Coney Barrett said Thursday the nation’s highest court will not block IU's policy.

The first day of the semester is set for Aug. 23.
