The City of Bloomington plans to remove a homeless encampment under the B-Line bridge over Grimes Lane. The city posted orange and white signs there Tuesday morning, indicating that those living under the bridge have until tomorrow morning to move personal belongings.
Mary Catherine Carmichael is public engagement director for the City of Bloomington. She said the encampment falls on city property. Its removal will follow the City policy that requires 72 hours’ notice before the encampment can be removed.
“Nobody is interested in being cruel or unkind in this process,” Carmichael said. “It’s just a matter of ‘hey, this is not an okay place for you to be.’”
Carmichael said the city is hopeful the people living under the bridge will move their belongings before police arrive Friday morning.
“If they have no way to move their belongings, we will offer to store those,” she said. “We will be taking pictures and making sure the right folks are identified with the right set of belongings.”
The city said it is communicating with nonprofit partners, including local shelters, to help support those living under the bridge after the camp is closed.
