State Hospitalizations Continue To Climb, Surpass 2,400 For First Time Since Jan. 15

Monroe County

Indiana health officials reported 49 new COVID-19 cases Friday in the Monroe County area, up from 35 Thursday, and 29 Wednesday. Last week on Aug. 25, the county recorded 60 new cases –the highest number of new cases in a day since Feb. 3. 

The county reported no new deaths Friday, and the total since the pandemic was declared in April 2020 is 187.

The county’s seven-day positivity rate is 5.4 percent, up from 5.2 percent Thursday, and 4.8 percent Wednesday. The county has recorded 13,700 positive cases since the pandemic began. 

Currently, 130 persons are hospitalized with the virus in District 8, which includes Monroe, Brown and Bartholomew counties. That’s down three from Thursday, but up from 129 Wednesday. Hospitalizations have increased in the area since a low of 12 cases in July. The last time the area recorded as many hospitalizations as Thursday was Jan. 9. 

Monroe County remains in the yellow advisory. It’s one of only four counties in the state in yellow, and the only one south of I-70. The rest of the state is in the higher orange and red advisory categories. The county is reporting 220 weekly cases per 100,00 residents, a significant increase from 128 last week. 

This week, MCCSC reported 37 COVID-19 cases throughout its school system.

The state recorded 5,079 new cases of COVID-19 Friday, down from 5,222 Thursday and up from 4,822 Wednesday. The number topped 5,000 most of last week, marking the highest number of daily cases since Jan. 9. 

The Indiana Department of Health recorded 20 new deaths Friday – measuring the time from Aug. 27 to September 2. The state’s overall total is 14,121.  

The state also reported more than 873,000 positive cases since the pandemic began.      

The state reported 2,443 Hoosiers hospitalized with the virus, up from 2,366 Thursday and 2,294 recorded Wednesday. Hospitalizations topped 2,000 last week for the first time since Jan. 24. Friday is the first-time hospitalizations have topped 2,400 since Jan. 15.

The state’s seven-day positivity rate increased to 11.3 percent Thursday, up from 11.2 percent Wednesday and 11.1 percent Tuesday. Last week it hovered just under 11 percent, after climbing from a low of 1.9 percent June 22.
