Water samples collected by the City of Bloomington Utilities confirmed the smell and odor complaints reported recently are caused by naturally occurring chemicals, the city said in a statement Friday.

The taste and odor complaints first reported to the city Sept. 10 are not a health concern, and are caused by Geosmin and Methyl-Isoborneol.

The city said in a statement these complaints are the first received about water quality since 2017, which was the year the city started adding powdered activated carbon at the Monroe Water Treatment Plant.

It’s normal for communities that get their water supply from a lake to get these types of complaints, according to the city’s statement.
