Three tenants remain at Seminary Pointe as the August 31 lease deadline approaches.
Capital Improvement Board President John Whikehart said the apartments have had 27 documented incidents in the past 25 days of trespassing, drug use, and vandalism.
“That means we’re absorbing $43,500 in additional security costs that had not been, it was not our intention to have those costs, but we need to make sure those properties are secured.” he said.
During this month’s CIB meeting, Whikehart also showed photos of extensive water damage.
Public comments took a heated stance toward the CIB for not negotiating the land swap with the city for affordable housing at Seminary Pointe.
The CIB voted several weeks ago to offer Seminary Pointe to Dora Hospitality for a new host hotel.
Commenter Matthew Joseph said land subsidies for developers shouldn’t go toward hotels and market rate apartments.
“We need to set a precedent that if you’re going to destroy affordable housing that you’re going to build more than what you destroyed, double it and make it for those who are the most vulnerable,” Joseph said.
If the properties don’t require abatements or face permit delays, demolition could begin November 4th and be completed by end of the year.

Third Street in front of the convention center expansion project is scheduled to close August 25 for two weeks.
Workers will replace curbs, sidewalks, crosswalk stripping, medians and ramps while adding a bus pull off lane.
