Increased Sexual Assault in IU Greek life Leads IU Panhellenic Association to Cancel Events With Frats

The IU Panhellenic Association canceled events with the Interfraternity Council Saturday because of increasing cases of sexual assaults at fraternity events or houses, according to an email sent by the PHA.

The association demanded the IFC take action to ensure the sisters of PHA are safe by holding fraternity members responsible.

The PHA asked for an active and permanent change in Greek life. Fraternities should counter the current unsafe and unsustainable culture with accountability and education, the email said.

Indiana University Police Department Chief Jill Lees said there has been an increase in sexual assault cases since students moved back to campus this August as compared to other years.

Lees said a good resource for students is the Rave Guardian App, which has a safe walk timer which alerts family and friends if the user is not home when expected.

“We honestly want to make sure that students have all the resources they need to report and to assist them moving forward,” Lees said.

Those who have experienced sexual assault or violence at IU can reach the Office for Sexual Violence Prevention and Victim Advocacy at 812-856-6687 and the Office of Student Conduct at 812-855-5419. To make a report or talk to police, contact Bloomington Police Department at 812-339-4477 or Indiana University Police Department at 812-855-4111.
