City of Bloomington reports 30 employee COVID-19 cases

Mayor Hamilton said this budget is designed to maintain city reserves of at 4 months of operating expenses as the pandemic continues.
Mayor Hamilton said this budget is designed to maintain city reserves of at 4 months of operating expenses as the pandemic continues.

The City of Bloomington reported 30 new COVID-19 cases among its employees this week, down from 38 last week.

In total, 262 city employees have tested positive since the pandemic began.

In a statement, the city said none of the 30 employees exposed members of the public.

Additionally, Mayor John Hamilton said the vast majority of new cases were not linked to previous employee cases.

“They’re individual new positive cases, and they are not related to each other in a significant way,” he said Friday. “It’s the community spread that’s showing up in our workforce, I think.”

A breakdown of the new cases:

  • Bloomington Housing Authority: 7
  • City of Bloomington Utilities (CBU): 7
  • City Hall: 5
  • Public Works: 4
  • Bloomington Police Department (BPD): 2
  • Bloomington Fire Department (BFD): 2
  • Bloomington Transit: 2
  • Parks and Recreation: 1

Three public works employees and two utilities employees identified close contacts; they have all been notified. One utilities employee was asymptomatic but tested positive as part of the city’s mandatory testing policy for those who have not submitted proof of vaccination.

Data about COVID-19 cases among city employees, in the county, and state can be found on the city’s  dashboard. Other city-related updates about the COVID-19 pandemic are assembled  here.
