Abra K. Bush, senior associate dean of Institute Studies at The Johns Hopkins Peabody Institute, is set to become the first woman dean of Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music.

Bush’s term as the David Henry Jacobs Bicentennial Dean will begin July 1, pending approval by the IU Board of Trustees.

IU Bloomington Provost and Executive Vice President Rahul Shrivastav announced Bush’s appointment on Wednesday, saying Bush’s “visionary leadership in performing arts education and scholarship are a perfect match” for IU’s music school.

“Abra’s academic experience, proven record of curricular development, and commitment to student success, faculty excellence, and diversity and inclusion position her well to further the global reputation of the school at the dawn of its second century,” said Shrivastav.

At the Peabody Institute, Bush oversees curriculum and personnel for academic and applied study areas. She is credited with developing groundbreaking curricula, forging new strategic partnerships, and growing the number of under-represented faculty by more than 65 percent.

Bush earned Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees from Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The Ohio State University.
