Angie Purdie is the winner in the Democratic primary for Monroe County Sheriff.
Purdie will face Republican Nathan Williamson in the November general election. She beat four other Democrats for the nomination: Joani Stalcup, Troy Thomas, Ruben D Marté, and Steve Hale.
Purdie worked as a probation officer for 15 years and has served as the Monroe County Board of Commissioners administrator since 2013. In this role, she manages budgets and personnel for county offices and oversees county buildings.
Purdie ran for sheriff to improve jail conditions and provide jail alternatives. She also called for additional crisis intervention, interpersonal communication, and diversity training for department employees.
The Monroe County sheriff salary is about $159,000 each year. The sheriff not only manages a crew of deputies but also oversees the county jail.
Current Monroe County Sheriff Brad Swain is term limited from seeking re-election but is running for the Indiana House District 62 Democratic nomination.
