Troy Thomas is the winner in the Democratic primary for Monroe County Sheriff.
Thomas will face Republican Nathan Williamson in the November general election. He defeated four other Democrats for the nomination: Joani Stalcup, Angie Purdie, Ruben D. Marté, and Steve Hale.
Thomas is a captain of the detective and road divisions in the sheriff’s department. He was raised in Bloomington and frequented the Banneker Community Center. Thomas had his first experience with the department at age 14 through the Sheriff’s Explorer Program and eventually worked at the jail after graduating high school.
He became the first Black deputy to work in the road division at 20-years-old.
Thomas ran for sheriff to address the need for a new jail and department staffing issues. He also said he is hoping to reduce the number of repeat offenders.
The Monroe County sheriff salary is about $159,000 each year. The sheriff not only manages a crew of deputies but also oversees the county jail.
Current Monroe County Sheriff Brad Swain is term limited from seeking re-election but is running for the Democratic nomination in Indiana House District 62.
