Coin toss decides Democratic representative in Bloomington precinct race

After receiving the same number of votes in this week’s election for precinct chair, Karen Granger and Alessia Modjarrad settled their tie the old-fashioned way: with a coin flip.

Modjarrad, a graduating senior at IU, won the toss and will represent Bloomington’s Precinct 23. She and Granger had tied with 5 votes.

David Henry, the Monroe Democratic Party chair, said a coin flip would be the fairest and most transparent way to decide the winner.

“The (decision) process really is up to the county chair, according to the State of Indiana Democratic Party bylaws,” Henry said. “And so, all I had to do was make a decision by six o’clock today.”

As the Democratic chair, Modjarrad will recruit and register voters in the 23rd Precinct. She would also be tasked with voting on a replacement for local officeholders representing her precinct if they were to leave their position.

“(I’ll be) making sure that we’re actively engaging Democratic voters and new voters in our community, canvassing for candidates,” Modjarrad said. “Really making sure that this November and for the next four years that we’re really turning out the vote.”

Granger wasn’t totally short-changed. She was named Democratic chair for Bloomington’s 24 th Precinct, which had an open seat.
