Heaviest travel in 2 years ahead of Memorial Day weekend

This Memorial Day weekend promises higher travel numbers than have been seen in multiple years, according to the  American Automobile Association.

Despite gas prices over 4 dollars a gallon, the AAA predicts a 4.6 percent increase in car travel for this weekend over last year.

AAA said it expects airline travel to increase this year as well. The Indianapolis Airport Authority anticipates “nearly 58,000 passengers” between May 27-30, according to a press release.

Megan Carrico, Director of Public Affairs for the Indianapolis Airport Authority, said passengers should arrive early to make sure that they successfully board their flights. She said the increase in traffic will make it harder to find places to park.

“Be ready for the trip, and head out to the airport to give yourself enough time,” Carrico said.

The incoming travelers for the race this weekend make travel across the state even busier. The AAA said travel numbers are reaching pre-pandemic levels.
