Indiana officials shut down two beaches at Lake Monroe over the weekend due to high water.

The state Department of Natural Resources announced the water level was more than 5 feet over normal on Saturday morning after recent heavy rainfall.

The decision affected the Paynetown and Fairfax state recreation areas.

“The water level as of this morning is 5.1' above normal pool and rising rapidly from the past few days of rain,” the DNR wrote Saturday in a Facebook post. “Our beaches at both Paynetown and Fairfax SRAs are now CLOSED due to high water.”

The department also closed the the beaches Sunday.

It wasn’t immediately clear if they were expected to open Monday.

The DNR said the closures would not affect boating.
