Two Indiana State football players were among the three students killed in a one-vehicle accident early Sunday morning in Riley, a town about 10 miles outside of Terre Haute.
Christian Eubanks, 18, from Waukegan, Ill., and Caleb VanHooser, 19, from Liberty Township, Ohio, were both freshmen on the Sycamores’ football team, according to an Indiana State press release.
Vigo County Sheriff John Plasse said the crash occurred around 1:30 a.m. Sunday. The vehicle left the roadway and hit a tree. It was on fire when deputies arrived.
“It is a terrible day for Indiana State football and a devastating loss for both the Eubanks and the VanHooser families,” ISU football coach Curt Mallory said in a news release. “Both young men were quality individuals who were loved and respected by their teammates and this staff. To say they will be missed is an understatement. Our continued prayers and support are with their families, friends, and teammates during this difficult time.”
A third student killed in the accident was Jayden Musili, a 19-year-old sophomore from Fort Wayne.
“There are no words to express the depth of our sadness about this tragedy,” ISU President Dr. Deborah J. Curtis said. “We send our condolences to the family and friends of the students involved. The Sycamore family is mourning and will support each other in this time of grief.”
ISU football players Omarion Dixon and John Moore survived the accident. They are out of intensive care but still in serious condition, according to the release.
The football team did not practice Monday.
