States like Kansas, Michigan, and Wisconsin – where lawmakers were looking to pass anti-abortion rights legislation – reported upticks in women voter registration this summer.
In May, the month the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson opinion was leaked – nearly 16,000 new voters registered in Indiana – up from more than 3,500 new voters in April.
May saw the highest count of new voters so far this year. More than 8,000 of them were male, more than 7,300 female, and 400 unidentified.
But in June, July, and August the ratio between men and women was closer. In June 6,299 new females registered– 92 fewer than men. In July, there was only a fourteen-person difference in new voters between men and women.
In August, new female registrations surpassed males for the only time so far this year at 6,251 to 6,203.
More females than males have been updating their registration. This year, more than 103,000 females updated their registration, compared to about 86,000.
Monroe County:
The jump was noted by Monroe County’s Election Supervisor, Karen Wheeler, who says they don’t have information on how numbers break down by gender, but they did notice an increase.
Roe v. Wade was overturned by the Supreme Court on a Friday– June 24. The following Monday, Monroe County Election Central counted 96 new voter registrations– the most that month.
"So it definitely jumped out," she said. "That is the weekend. But even for a weekend it was higher than what it had been for at least a month earlier. In May 23, it was 85.”
The second highest day in June for Monroe County was the 13th with 76 new voters.
Indiana’s special session ended Friday, August 5. The following Monday, the county tallied 84 new registrations. The highest day for voter registration in August was Monday the 22 nd with 106 registrations.
