President Pamela Whitten on Thursday held her first State of the University address since becoming president last year.
Whitten’s speech mainly focused on the newly announced IU 2030 strategic plan, which hopes to transform student success, research, and service over the course of seven years.

The plan’s framework includes the expansion of support for externally funded research from last year's $520.7 million to $700 million annually. The IU community will be able to adapt the framework to address the unique concerns of each campus over the next six months.
“Now is the time to dream, to think big and to imagine the university we want IU to become,” Whitten said. “The framework we've established with its ambitious goals reflects our determination to occupy the highest tier in American higher education.”

The president also emphasized the efforts of students, faculty, staff, and alumni who have contributed to the development and growth of the university.
“We can expect to be a university that serves the educational health care, economic and cultural needs of our nation, our state, and our communities with an impact that spreads from Indiana to every part of the world,” Whitten said.
Whitten is the university's 19th and first female president. She has been in office since July 2021.
