Man in custody after Kroger parking lot stabbing

A man was arrested Monday night and charged with aggravated battery, battery with a deadly weapon, and resisting law enforcement in connection with a stabbing.

Curtis Martin, 35, also has an outstanding arrest warrant for the charges of possession of methamphetamine and carrying a handgun without a license.

At around 11 p.m. officers responded to a report of a stabbing at the Liberty Drive Kroger. According to the BPD, officers arrived on the scene to find a 27-year-old man with a stab wound to his lower abdomen. The man identified Martin as the man who stabbed him.

The victim was taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital where he reported that he had seen Martin outside of Kroger when he arrived at the store. His family went in but the victim stayed with his truck because he was concerned Martin would try to steal from it. The victim then told officers that Martin approached his truck and removed a large knife from a bag he was carrying. He said he believed Martin was going to slash one of his tires, so he grabbed Martin’s hand.

Police said Martin then stabbed the victim as they fought over the knife. The fight continued until Martin eventually walked away to the west on foot.

BPD and the Monroe County Sheriff’s office checked the area around Kroger in an attempt to locate the suspect. A BPD officer located a man matching the suspect’s description and told him to get on the ground, but the suspect refused to cooperate and ran away from the officer. The suspect then entered a fenced area belonging to Baxter Healthcare Pharmaceutical.

He was then located in a wooded area but refused to exit. A deputy with the  Monroe County Sheriff's Office released his K9 unit into the wooded area where the suspect was successfully located and apprehended the suspect.

Martin, whose address was listed as transient, was taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital for treatment. Upon release, he was transported to the Monroe County Jail where he remains in custody.
