An Owen County man is dead after an apparent shootout during a home invasion Wednesday night.

It happened north of Spencer near the intersection of US 231 and North Cataract Road.

According to a state police press release, the homeowners called 911 shortly before 8:15 p.m. to report an active home invasion. But by the time police arrived, the two parties had exchanged gunfire and the suspects had already fled the scene.

The Owen County Sheriff’s Department reported finding the homeowner, 39-year-old Gilardo Garcia Salinas injured outside the residence. Responders provided first aid but Salinas was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two suspects reportedly left in an unknown direction in a gray or blue passenger vehicle. It is unknown if any suspects were injured, and investigators are reviewing video footage from nearby locations and “following up with additional leads.”

The police do not believe the public is in danger from the suspects, and as anyone with information to call 812-332-4411 and ask for Detective Ian Matthews.
