Democratic Party schedules caucus to fill ballot vacancy

The caucus will begin at 4:30 p.m. on June 30 at Bloomington City Hall.

The Monroe County Democratic Party will hold a caucus to fill a ballot vacancy. This caucus will choose which candidate will be on the fall ballot for City Council District 6.

This comes after David Wolfe Bender withdrew as the nominee for the district. Bender’s withdrawal came amid allegations he violated state election laws by running for office using a District 6 address he did not live at.

The caucus will begin at 4:30 p.m. on June 30 at Bloomington City Hall. The caucus will be open to the public and eligible voters will have until 6:45 p.m. to cast their ballots for the nominee.

As of today, only Sydney Zulich has filed candidacy for this vacancy. Zulich initially planned to run as an independent candidate, but filed a declaration of candidacy to fill the ballot vacancy.

Eligible candidates seeking nomination for this position have until June 27 to qualify for the caucus. The party has until July 3 to file its nominee for the fall ballot. For more information, contact Monroe County Election Central at 812-349-2612 or at monroecountyvoters.us.

“We have one more vote for this primary to go,” party chair David Henry said in a news release. “Filling ballot vacancies, while rare, is a well-established practice under Indiana Code. As we look ahead to the fall, I am happy that at the end of this caucus, we will have a full slate of Democrats for our community to consider for the next term.”
