One man is dead following a shooting at a home outside Salem Monday night.

According to an Indiana State Police release, Washington County Sheriff’s Department officers responded to a call a little after 6:30 p.m. about a shooting in the front yard of a home on South Organ Springs Road.

An investigation determined that Michael Chastain arrived at the address and drove through the front yard before stopping and confronting the homeowner. Chastain forced the homeowner to the ground, then “pulled out a weapon and pointed it at the homeowner’s head.” The homeowner’s wife came out of the house armed and shot Chastain.

Chastain was taken to Saint Vincent Hospital in Salem, where he was pronounced dead.

No charges have been filed, but the case will be turned over to the Washington County Prosecutor’s Office.
