A 40-year-old man died Saturday while swimming at Lake Monroe, the Department of Natural Resources reported.

The department said Rajesh Kumar of Ozone Park, New York went under water and failed to resurface late Saturday afternoon.

In a statement Sunday, the department said conservation officers and the Monroe County dive team responded to the Paynetown State Recreation Area.

“Lifesaving measures were attempted but Kumar was pronounced dead on scene,” the statement said. “Witnesses stated that Kumar jumped off a boat to swim, and then never resurfaced after going under the water.”

The statement said no one was using lifejackets at the time of the incident.

It said the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, Indiana University Health Ambulance, and the Monroe County Fire Department also assisted in the search.

In April, two Indiana University students who were boating with friends on Lake Monroe jumped into the lake and failed to resurface.

Days later, authorities found the bodies of Siddhant Shah, 19, and Aryan Vaidya, 20, after extensive searches around the reservoir.
