Mother Bears opening Columbus location next year

Local pizza restaurant Mother Bears is planning to open new location in Columbus next March.

The location will be in the NexusPark, a multi-purpose space being built in the former Fair Oaks Mall.

“It’s a big job, but we are very excited about being there,” Mother Bears owner Ray McConn said. “It seems like a great opportunity.”

McConn said one of the selling points of the NexusPark location is that the space will include an indoor fieldhouse, which will bring in customers from the sporting events.

“It just seemed like, again, a tremendous opportunity,” he said. “Not only to supply the people of Columbus and Bartholomew County, but also all of these different sporting events.”

Mother Bears opened its original location next to the IU campus in 1973 and expanded to the West location in 2016. There was previously an Indianapolis location, making this the second location outside of Bloomington.

The Columbus location will occupy 9,015 square feet of space. It will be located next to Riviera Maya Mexican Restaurant.

McConn said that as far as other locations, they are taking it one step at a time.

“The focus really is on presenting a great product every day, and that’s a battle in and of itself,” McConn said.

CORRECTION: Removed "This will be the third Mother Bears location and the first outside of Bloomington."
