Hamilton appoints convention center board members

Bloomington Mayor John Hamilton appointed two new members to the Capital Improvement Board (CIB), according to a news release Friday.

Mick Renneisen and Adam Thies will help oversee the proposed Monroe Convention Center expansion project.

The seven-member board was created to lead any convention center projects. The board was enacted this July by the Monroe County Board of Commissioners.

In addition to overseeing previous convention center expansion efforts, Renneisen has previous experience as Bloomington Deputy Mayor and director of Bloomington Parks and Recreation. He also served on the Bloomington/Monroe County Convention and Visitors Bureau Board.

Thies is the Associate Vice President for capital planning at IU. He has previously worked as director for the Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development. Thies is the founder of EDEN Collaborative, a real estate and city planning consulting firm. He was named an outstanding alumnus of Ball State’s College of Architecture and Planning.

“I am grateful to two highly talented and publicly minded individuals who have agreed to put their shoulders to the wheel,” Hamilton said in the release.

Renneisen and Thies will join four previously appointed members.

Joyce Poling and John Whikehart were appointed by the Monroe County Board of Commissioners on July 19. Poling is the local industrial development committee member of the Bloomington Industrial Development Advisory Commission. Whikehart is former chancellor of Ivy Tech Community College and former Bloomington Deputy Mayor.

Eric Spoonmore was appointed by the Monroe County Council. Spoonmore is President and CEO of the Greater Bloomington Chamber of Commerce. He was previously the district four representative for the County Council and an associate director at the Kelley School of Business.

Doug Bruce was appointed by the Bloomington City Council Aug. 16. Bruce is the owner of Tabor/Bruce Architects. He has also worked with the city as a board member on the Bloomington Historic Preservation Commission.

The six members will vote as a group to appoint the seventh member.
