A suspect is in custody after a body was found by a woman arriving at work early Tuesday morning.

Bloomington Police arrived in the 2100 block of South Liberty Drive around 6:20 a.m. and identified a deceased male, who appeared to have a gunshot wound in his chest, according to a BPD press release.

Police investigators located a van parked nearby with a bullet hole in its windshield, and found a man later identified as 56-year-old Scott A. Cooper asleep inside. After speaking to Cooper at the scene, he was taken to the police department for questioning.

The van driven by Cooper and a vehicle believed to belong to the dead man were towed away and searched. Police located a .380 caliber handgun inside Cooper’s van.

Cooper was taken to the Monroe County Jail and charged with murder.

Police are withholding the identity of the deceased man pending notification of next-of-kin.
