Incumbent Monroe County Commissioner Julie Thomas has won the Democratic nomination for the District 2 seat on the Board of Commissioners

Thomas, a three-term commissioner, won Tuesday over opponent Peter Iversen, a one-term county councilman representing Council District 1, by a narrow margin.

Debates between the two were often contentious, with Iversen accusing Thomas of stalling on projects such as building a new jail and expanding the convention center. Thomas has defended her actions.

Thomas was not at the Monroe County Democrats' watch party Tuesday and did not respond to an interview request from WFIU/WTIU News.

Weighing in on the results, Iversen said, "That was a very close race, which means a lot of the issues that my team and I talked about during this race resonated with a lot of Monroe County voters."

Thomas ran on issues including childcare needs, housing security, mental health, substance abuse treatment, environmental protection and reducing recidivism.

Commissioner District 2 includes Bloomington Township, which covers the northern part of Bloomington and beyond. Candidates must live in the district, but all county voters can vote for them.

Thomas does not have an opponent in the Nov. 5 general election.
