IU President Pamela Whitten is having eye surgery Thursday. The procedure caused her to miss work and listening sessions with faculty.

The operation was previously scheduled but had to be bumped up due to complications, according to an IU media liaison.

Whitten had planned to meet with faculty from the Kelley School of Business and School of Education today. Ash Soni, dean of the Kelley School, confirmed with WFIU that its session was postponed until late summer or early fall.

The president’s surgery and recovery come at a challenging moment in her career. She’s faced criticism and difficult questioning in these listening sessions from IU professors, many of whom voted with supermajorities in the faculty council and individual schools calling for her removal.

The IU Board of Trustees says it stands behind her but is ordering an independent review of the campus climate.

The president’s office added that Whitten expects to make a full recovery and looks forward to resuming normal duties in the coming weeks.
