Jill Maurer Burnett, a third-generation Indiana University alumna and graduate of the Kelley School of Business, is IU’s newest alumni-elected trustee.

Burnett will replace incumbent Jeremy Morris. Her three-year term begins July 1.

In such a crowded field, Burnett faced stiff competition but won by a comfortable 838 vote margin over her top competitor. Still, she took just 19 percent of total votes. Over 20,000 IU alumni participated out of the more than 770,000 living graduates.

Burnett issued the following statement through an IU news release:

“I’m thrilled to be elected as a trustee for my beloved alma mater, which has played a pivotal role not just in my life but much of my family’s. I’m looking forward to working with fellow trustees to ensure Indiana University continues to help students grow, learn and better our world.”

Burnett served as president of the Maurer Family Foundation and Women for Riley, and she sat on the boards of several other charitable organizations. Burnett also runs Mickey’s Camp, a charity summer camp for adults.

She’s the daughter of Michael “Mickey” Maurer, namesake of IU’s law school and chairman of the Indianapolis Business Journal.

Burnett told WFIU News in a May interview that her top priority as trustee would be addressing safety on campus “ with the things in Dunn Meadow.”

“I just want every student and faculty to feel like they're being heard, but at the same time abide by the rules,” she said.

The trustees are currently in the process of creating new “expressive activity” rules to govern speech and expression on IU campuses.

Three of IU’s nine-member board are elected by alumni while six are appointed by the governor. Trustees serve three-year terms with the exception of one student trustee who serves two years.
