County opens cooling stations as high heat returns

Monroe County is making eight fire stations available as cooling stations today through Thursday with temperatures predicted to reach into the low 90s.

The National Weather Service predicts heat indexes could reach triple digits during that time.

The cooling stations will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day.

Cooling stations are designated for those who do not have air conditioning to come and cool down. Food, showers and sleep areas are not available, according to a county press release.

Pets are allowed at Station 21 and Station 19 but must be in a kennel or carrier.

Cooling center locations:

  • Bloomington Fire Station 1, 226 South College Ave, Bloomington
  • Ellettsville Fire Department, 5080 West State Road 46, Ellettsville
  • Monroe Fire Protection District Station 22, 3953 South Kennedy Drive, Bloomington
  • Monroe Fire Protection District Station 21, 9094 South Strain Ridge Road, Bloomington
  • Monroe Fire Protection District Station 23, 8019 South Rockport Road, Bloomington
  • Monroe Fire Protection District Station 25, 5081 North Old State Road 37, Bloomington
  • Monroe Fire Protection District Station 29, 2130 South Kirby Road, Bloomington
  • Monroe Fire Protection District Station 24, 7606 East State Road 45, Unionville

The county said it will monitor the weather to see if it needs to extend the days for cooling stations.
