Indiana State Police will start its annual impaired driving enforcement campaign on Friday.
ISP says state and local police will increase patrols and checkpoints to catch intoxicated drivers.
In 2022, about 7 percent of Indiana’s traffic deaths involved at least one drunken driver, according to the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute. Slightly fewer than 1,000 people died in collisions overall.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration funds the increased enforcement through grants.
State police encourages people who drink to designate a sober driver or use public transit or a ride-hailing service for safe transportation.
The campaign ends Sept. 2.
