IU President Pamela Whitten is taking applications for a two-year “ faculty fellow” position, meant to represent professors’ voices in executive decision making.
The president pitched the role at a June Board of Trustees meeting as a response to faculty’s frayed trust in the administration.
“The faculty fellow will work across the university to cultivate relationships with faculty leadership across all campuses,” she explained on June 14.
That means working closely with Whitten and the University Faculty Council, according to a press release. The role is for consulting only and does not include authority. It is selected by a search committee rather than faculty government.
The search is being led by Susan Sciame-Giesecke, IU’s former vice president for regional campuses and online education who retired at the end of June.
The chosen faculty member will have a position in the president’s office. The university will buy out 10 percent of their time after the role begins this fall to set up the position.
Whitten said the role, which begins in January, will be full time, with some flexibility for teaching and research obligations. IU will buy out the faculty member’s salary for their department during their two-year term.
Candidates must submit their curricula and letters of interest by Sept. 25.
