Indiana University’s Bloomington campus set an enrollment record for this fall with 48,424 students, the school announced Friday.

IU reported that applications for the Bloomington campus increased 25 percent from last year.

Bloomington campus enrollment has increased by about 5,000 students since 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic impacted colleges nationwide.

“Our continued strong enrollment shows the value and impact of an IU degree in the eyes of students and employers,” President Pamela Whitten said. “We are proud of our commitment to affordability and creating a student experience that equips students for resounding success in the workplace and beyond.”

Total enrollment at all IU campuses is 88,490 — down from 90,144 last year. In the last 10 years, IU’s overall enrollment has decreased by about 7,500 students.

Enrollment for beginner students — students who just started at IU — increased by 3.5 percent compared to a year ago. More than 24,000 beginner students enrolled. In Bloomington, the university welcomed the second-largest beginning class ever with 9,600 students.

On July 1, IU Indianapolis officially launched, marking IUPUI’s split with Purdue University. This fall, 20,568 students enrolled. Applications were up more than 20 percent over last year.
