Indiana University is buying a building at 1619 Mass Ave. NW in Washington, D.C.

The Indiana University Foundation plans to expand its presence in the U.S. capital.

IU is buying property in Washington, D.C. from Johns Hopkins University. The eight-story building at 1619 Mass Ave. NW would accommodate housing for about 40 students, classrooms and offices.

A university spokesperson declined to comment further “out of respect for the local community and the planning process.”

Approvals are still needed. In a presentation to the Dupont Circle Advisory Neighborhood Commission, IU, Johns Hopkins and a law firm shared their plans for the campus. IU plans to file applications to the Zoning Commission in October, which will be subject to a public hearing.

IU already has programs in the capital.

With the Washington , D.C. Advancement Centerat 1455 Pennsylvania Avenue, alumni, faculty, staff and students can use office space or book a conference room for free. The O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs offers a Washington D.C. Accelerator Program — a graduate program where students live and work in Washington. Undergraduates can enroll in a semester-long residential program, called the IU Internship in Politics, Opportunity, Leadership, Social Entrepreneurship. Students take courses taught by IU instructors.

The Commercial Observer reported last year that more schools want space in Washington. About 50 schools have a presence in the city.

In September, Syracuse University opened a new center in Dupont Circle. Last year, the University of Southern California joined the Dupont Circle neighborhood. New York University, Texas A&M University, Arizona State University, the University of California and Johns Hopkins set up campuses in the city after million-dollar purchases and renovations.
