Owen County Commissioner Gary Burton resigned from his District 1 seat Wednesday. The county Republican party announced his decision last week.
"I will not be able to commit the time needed to represent the taxpayers as they should be," Burton said. He is resigning to take care of his father, as well as focus on personal and business obligations.
He had served in the role since 2018. The county Republican party recognized Burton for “maintaining the highway department and successfully spearheading a revision of the insurance for county employees.”
District 1 includes Jackson, Harrison, Jennings, Taylor, Montgomery and Wayne Townships.
Residents interested in running can contact Party Chair Kristi Risk for additional information.
Candidates will introduce themselves at the party’s May 8 precinct meeting. The public meeting will begin at 7 p.m. at the 4H building at the Owen County Fairgrounds.
A caucus at 7 p.m. May 29 at the fairgrounds will appoint the new commissioner.
