Columbus Regional Health, an independent health system in south central Indiana, will close its Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit, outpatient practice and orthopedics and sports medicine due to financial challenges.

CRH will also end its athletic trainer program for Indiana University-Columbus, Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation and Flatrock-Haw Creek School Corporation.

The cuts will be made over the next few months and affect around 40 people. CRH said it can’t provide a number of layoffs because some employees will be moved to other positions. The goal is to accomplish the relocation in 60 days.

CRH said the cuts are caused by increased cost in supplies, legislative scrutiny, federal and state funding cuts and health insurance companies delaying or denying reimbursements or giving reimbursements at low rates.

CRH’s outpatient rehabilitation such as physical and occupational therapy will remain as normal.
