Contaminated Meat Recalled Before Ending Up In School Lunch

A major beef recall is underway after fear contaminated meat could hit Georgia school lunches.

Palo Duro Meat out of Amarillo, Texas is recalling 40,000 pounds of beef after a sample tested positive for E. coli O157:H7.

The meat had been "inadvertently shipped" to six Georgia school districts, the USDA's Food and Safety Inspection Service announced, due to a tracking error that allowed it to leave the warehouse.

Most of the beef didn't leave the warehouse, and there have been no reports of any tainted meat being served or consumed in school lunches.

Only Georgia has been affected, the USDA reports. The batch in question is 40 pound boxes containing four 10 pound chubs of fine ground beef marked "Est. 7282" with production code of 19110.
