The signal light at the intersection of Kirkwood Avenue and College Avenue is working again July 8, 2025 after an outage of more than a week.

The signal light at the intersection of Kirkwood Avenue and College Avenue is working again today after an outage of more than a week.

During the outage, the intersection had a four-way stop sign. The signal light has a battery backup, but it only lasts for 24 hours.

A separated wire located underground in the alley between Alley Bar and the old Irish Lion building caused the outage, said Joe VanDeventer, Bloomington’s Director of Street Operations.

Initially it was difficult to locate the damage. Duke Energy had the equipment to detect the issue.

“It can measure the voltage underground, but it was having problems because, you know, it's under in this particular area, it's under bricks, it's under concrete,” VanDeventer said. “There's quite a bit of coverage over the top of it. It's just not under a grassy area.”

About two to three feet of concrete was excavated in the alley to repair the wires. The wires have been placed in an above ground box to make them easier to repair if there are future complications.
