State police confirmed they were investigating.

A northern Indiana woman died in custody early Sunday, officials reported.

Corrections employees at the St. Joseph County Jail in South Bend discovered the woman, later identified as Janette Navarro, 28, unresponsive in her cell around 3:20 a.m. Sunday, the St. Joseph County Police Department reported.

“Officers immediately began life-saving efforts and continued until medics arrived. Unfortunately, the inmate was pronounced deceased at the scene,” a department statement said. “At this time, no foul play is suspected.”

The statement said the Indiana State Police were called in to investigate as per protocol. The department referred further inquiries to that agency.

State police confirmed they were investigating in a separate statement Sunday.

It said an autopsy was scheduled for Tuesday at Western Michigan University.

According to court records, Navarro had been facing misdemeanor intimidation charges. A hearing had been scheduled for July 21.
