On Tuesday, July 23 at 8pm, WFIU will partner with the Jacobs School of Music for a live simulcast of the final concert in the 2013 Summer Music series, part of the IU Summer Festival of the Arts. Jacobs School Dean Emeritus Dr. Charles Webb will co-host the broadcast with WFIU Music Director David Wood.
Dominick DiOrio will conduct the Festival Chorus and Orchestra in the choral transcription of Samuel Barber's moving Adagio for Strings together with the "Great" C minor Mass, K. 427, of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
This is one of my favorite works. I think it's even perhaps better than [Mozart's] Requiem. It's perhaps his best work because it takes from so many styles. You hear opera in the work throughout, while the choral writing is virtuousic, athletic, moving, melancholic. - Dominick DiOrio
The C minor Mass is an incomplete work from the middle of Mozart's adult life. The Kyrie, Gloria, and Sanctus movements are complete, but the Credo was only partially finished, and the Agnus Dei is completely absent. DiOrio has chosen a version that does not attempt to complete the work, instead "filling out" the Mass through the choral transcription Samuel Barber himself composed of his Adagio for Strings using the text of the Agnus Dei; although in concert order the Barber will come before the Mozart.
